Adams welcomes US Senate decision on Immigration Bill

28 June, 2013 - by Gerry Adams TD

Sinn Féin president, Gerry Adams TD, has welcomed the decision by the United States Senate to approve a comprehensive immigration reform bill that has “the potential to lift the fear of discovery and expulsion from undocumented Irish citizens working in the USA”.
The Sinn Féin leader praised the “efforts of the Irish immigration lobby and all of those who have facilitated this important step forward”.
Teachta Adams said:
“The decision by the US Senate to approve a comprehensive immigration reform Bill has the potential to lift the fear of discovery and expulsion from undocumented Irish citizens working in the USA.
“I want to commend the efforts of the Irish Immigration lobby which has worked tirelessly for this decision and the US Senators who backed this legislation. Particular praise is due to Senator Schumer and the bi-partisan "gang of eight" senators who led this.
“It is a measure of the importance of this legislation that it received bi-partisan support in the Senate but now it must go to the Congress to clear the final hurdle.
“I would urge all of those Congress members, particularly those from both main parties who have been hugely supportive of the Irish peace process, to work together to facilitate the passage of this legislation.”
