Call for elimination of gender pay gap – Jennifer McCann

3 July, 2013 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA and Junior Minister Jennifer McCann has called for the elimination of the gender pay gap.

Speaking at the launch of the Equality Commission’s revised code of practice on equal pay the West Belfast MLA said:

"For too long statistics have shown women's pay has been lower than that of men’s.  While the gap has narrowed, equality will only be achieved when the gap has been closed completely.

“The revised Code of Practice is an important step towards closing that gap.  It is a practical step towards ensuring equality of opportunity and equal treatment for men and women.

“Later this month the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) will examine how we have performed in terms of our gender equality obligations.

“There are still many areas in life where women are discriminated against and all of us must work towards challenging that inequality wherever it manifests itself.”
