Sinn Féin MEP congratulates new EU Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly
Sinn Fein MEP, Martina Anderson has congratulated Emily O’Reilly on being elected as the new EU Ombudsman.
Martina Anderson said:
“I send warmest congratulations to Emily O’Reilly on her election as the new EU Ombudsman. I recently voiced strong opposition to revelations that the two largest groups in the Parliament were proposing members of their respective groupings as nominees for the position.
“I am therefore delighted that these attempts to have what would have been, for want of a better description, a political appointee, to what must be an apolitical position.
“As a strong advocate of the need for the services of an Ombudsman that can act independently I believe that the holder of the Office should have no political baggage that could be used to undermine any decisions taken.
“I was of the firm belief that the person best qualified and who eminently meets the criteria laid down in statute for this position is Emily O Reilly – presently the Ombudsman in the South of Ireland. She has experience, reputation and ability to bring the independence and transparency required to this important position.
“I am pleased that the majority of MEPs agreed that a strong, independent voice is what is required and that they supported Emily O’Reilly’s nomination. I wish her all the best as she embarks on this new challenge for which I am confident she is more than capable of meeting.”
