Sinn Féin bill could ensure quality services for rural communities
Sinn Féin TD, Sandra McLellan, has called on the government to support Sinn Féin’s Equal Status (Amendment) Bill.
The Cork East TD says the bill could help put a stop to the huge cuts to essential services imposed on rural communities in recent years.
“Part of my constituency is rural and I can see that cuts in services create erosion in the quality of life.
“The closure of garda stations, post offices and transport systems alongside the shutting down of schools is tearing the heart out of rural areas. Cuts in the health services, hospitals or family resource centres and the lack of childcare have accelerated this decline.
“Rural areas, with the huge potential which exists in the agri-food sector, could drive our economic recovery.
“However, that will simply not happen unless there are sustainable communities and sustainable communities have at their root, decent provision of services.
“This equality bill will require that rural people cannot be discriminated against in the provision of goods and services and I believe that can assist in safeguarding services in rural areas, and protecting rural communities.”
