NIO Ministers fail to genuinely engage in resolution of civil service dispute

30 July, 2004

Sinn Fein Fermanagh South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew has criticised the NIO for failure to genuinely engage in finding a resolution to the ongoing civil service dispute.

Ms Gildernew said:

"Some of the most marginalised people are suffering as a result of the refusal of British NIO Ministers to genuinely engage in finding a resolution to the ongoing civil service dispute. The elderly people in receipt of pensions, people on benefits, learner drivers, the farming community and many others are suffering because of the arrogance and inflexibility of NIO Ministers.

"Paul Murphy and Ian Pearson along with other senior managers within the NIO need to wake up to the urgency of this situation. It cannot be allowed to drift on forever. We need to see genuine dialogue without pre-conditions. In failing to sort out this dispute the NIO and British direct rule Ministers are failing everyone living in the Six Counties.

"It is a disgrace that the NIO and civil service management are refusing to recognise the legitimate concerns of the Trade Unions. Instead they have used threats and intimidation to make a difficult situation worse." ENDS
