Cullinane welcomes new safety initiative for Irish fishing industry

8 July, 2013 - by David Cullinane TD

Speaking this afternoon on the government’s plans to introduce a wide ranging safety initiative for the Irish fishing industry, Sinn Féin Senator David Cullinane said:

“Any initiative that improves the safety of our fishing fleet and helps in some way to prevent tragedies such as those we have seen in the recent past is very welcome.

“Sinn Féin welcomes the introduction of this wide-ranging package and we support the minister’s plans to introduce a more stringent fishing vessel code of practice and the establishment of a high level working group on safety in the Irish fishing industry.

“Sinn Féin has long called for the introduction of measures like the ones introduced today in an effort to stem the serious loss of life at sea, and to ensure that the state supports all of those working in our fishing industry, especially when it comes to health and safety issues.

“However while we welcome Minister Coveney’s initiative we also feel that the government needs to do more to support the fishing industry in general, and fishing communities in particular.

“The government needs to acknowledge that EU fishing policies and imposed changes in work practices have had a devastating impact on coastal communities around the country.

“Sinn Féin believes the government should immediately introduce a multifaceted package to aid such communities that would include targeted employment and income supports.

“And that such measures should be introduced as part of a wider range of stimulus that would include a yearly review of all fishing stocks.”
