Sinn Féin councillor slams park violence
Slamming those involved in this morning’s violence in a North Belfast park, local Sinn Féin councillor Gerard McCabe said:
“This disgraceful violence in the Waterworks Park in North Belfast was very distressing for local people using this popular facility.
“I understand that there were five people involved in a fight and one man was seriously injured and brought to hospital. The PSNI were quickly on the scene and made three arrests.
“Initial reports of this being a sectarian incident have proved to be wrong and we now understand that the incident involved people drinking in the park.
“It’s completely unacceptable that this drinking behaviour is allowed to continue in our community facilities and we regularly raise the matter at every statutory level.
“Park workers can’t be expected to deal with crowds of drinkers abusing families and behaving aggressively. The PSNI need to ensure our community spaces are safe and remove drink from these gangs.”
