More people emigrating than coming off the Live Register – Cullinane

31 July, 2013 - by David Cullinane TD

Following the publication of the latest disappointing Live Register figures, Senator David Cullinane, Sinn Féin spokesperson on jobs, enterprise and innovation said that these figures must be viewed in the context of continued high emigration, which has had a greater impact than government policy, which has failed the Irish people.

“Over the past year 87,000 of our people have emigrated. That equates to 7,250 leaving every month or twice the about of people that came of the Live register. Today’s live register figure must be viewed in that context. Despite the claims, press releases and targets it is clear that it emigration has a larger impact than government policy.

“The current discussion on the size of the reduction in the coming budget fails to recognise that taking money out of the economy is depressing growth and costing jobs. The austerity policy of Labour and Fine Gael has failed our people, our enterprises and our economy.

“It the government is serious about tackling unemployment and emigration, there is a need to invest in the domestic economy and infrastructure projects that will enhance our national competitiveness”.
