Is Varadkar paving the way to privatisation of Dublin Bus? – Ellis
Sinn Fein transport spokesperson Dessie Ellis has called on Minister Leo Varadkar to hold emergency talks with Dublin Bus and its workers to resolve the ongoing dispute over cuts to drivers’ wages.
Deputy Ellis said: “Government has already signaled its intention to cut subsidies to Dublin Bus next year and in 2015. Minister Varadkar seems to be paving the way for privatization of the capital’s transport services rather than supporting this vital social service and the workers within it.
“The minister should step in now and do all he can to avoid the inconvenience that a strike of vital public transport services will cause on a working day. His lack of intervention is unacceptable.
“Dublin Bus workers have legitimate grievances with the management and whose plan to cut costs which will see many drivers wages cut significantly.
“No worker takes the decision to strike lightly and the fact that the union members in Dublin Bus did so is an indication of the depth of feeling in the company about management action.
“These cuts to overtime rates and sick leave are being enforced because of the mismanagement of the company as a whole, the overpayment of executives the long running under funding of the service by the state.”
