DUP MLA lets his party and constituents down again

6 August, 2013

Sinn Féin councillor Jim McVeigh has slammed DUP MLA William Humphrey for failing to condemn the assault on Belfast Mayor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir today.

The councillor said:

"Following the disgraceful assault on the Mayor of Belfast Máirtín Ó Muilleoir today the DUP MLA William Humphrey refused to condemn the attack on the elected representative and Belfast's first citizen during a radio interview.

"William Humphrey let himself and his party down with his ridiculous comment regarding how a religious statue ended up on a loyalist bonfire and has followed that up by this failure to condemn the assault on the Belfast Mayor.

"It is clear that a small section of unionism is trying to stop progress and from Belfast becoming a city of equals. William Humphrey is aligning himself with this negative and sectarian element. The DUP has continued to be led by the nose by this element and it's time that William Humphrey and his party colleagues stood up for democracy, equality and against sectarian hatred."
