Sinn Féin MLA welcomes release of further historic Inquest files
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Truth & Victims Maeve McLaughlin has welcomed the release by the Minister responsible for Public Records Carál Ní Chuilín of a further three historic Inquest/Crown Court files.
Maeve McLaughlin said:
“This is another step forward in the rights of people for truth recovery and the Minister, who has the power to release the files under the law, is to be commended for doing so.
“Truth and openness should be the guiding principles when dealing with these matters with each case dealt with on an individual basis.
“I know the Minister is continuing to take advice from the Attorney General John Larkin in her role as keeper of the public records.
“The release of these Inquest/Crown Court files is about the rights of citizens and the ability of the Executive to respond to those rights. It continues on from the Minister’s significant intervention in May when she released two historic Inquest files despite unwarranted pressure from a range of security interests to prevent this happening.”
