Ó hÓisín calls for autonomous DVA for North
Responding to moves to close the DVLA Office in Coleraine with possible loss of dozens of jobs, East Derry Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Ó hÓisín has called on DOE Minister Mark H Durkan to seek powers to establish an autonomous Vehicle Liciencng and Taxation Agency (VLTA) in the North.
Cathal Ó hÓisín said:
"The threathened closure of the DVLA Office in Coleraine and the sesultant loss of jobs is just another example of why we need to demand maximum fiscal powers for the Assembly. So long as decisions which impact on our local economy and job prospects, are taken by the mandarins in Whitehall we will be unable to design and develop sustainable structures that will rejuvenate our economy and protect our workforce.
"Just as with corporation tax, airline passemger tax and other fiscal areas that should be transferred to the responsibility of the Assembly so too should control of road tax, vechicle registration and testing be brought under local control.
"The Minister should seek the support of his Executive colleagues to demand transfer of these powers as the only means of assuring that the jobs will stay here and possibly create opportunities for further job creation."
