Carthy attacks McDowell record on Seanad
Sinn Féin spokesperson for the party's campaign for a yes vote in the Seanad referendum, Matt Carthy, has called on voters to look at the record of Michael McDowell and others including Micheál Martin when making up their minds on which way to vote in the Seanad referendum. He went on to accuse McDowell of hypocrisy.
Speaking today Carthy said;
“Sinn Féin is calling for the abolition of the Seanad because it is elitist and undemocratic.
“One of the key figures fronting the campaign for the retention of the Seanad is the same man who said inequality is good for society.
“Michael McDowell was a minister in two governments that increased inequality in this state.
“During the course of his terms of office neither he nor the governments he was part of did anything to reform the Seanad. In fact at one point he claimed to be in favour of abolition of the Seanad. This is pure political opportunism from someone who is looking to re-establish himself politically.
“The date has been set for the referendum and the campaign is getting underway. I would urge voters to look carefully at the record of McDowell and others such as Fianna Fail leader Micheál Martin who are now talking about reform. When they had the opportunity to act they did nothing. The reality is they are happy to keep the current elitist undemocratic Seanad as it is.”
