Ruane to raise care home abuse failings at Policing Board

19 September, 2013 - by Caitríona Ruane

Sinn Féin MLA and member of the Policing Board, Caitriona Ruane has stated that Sinn Féin will be raising serious concerns surrounding the PSNI's investigation into the abuse of children in care at the Policing Board today.

Speaking today Ms Ruane said:

"The recent revelations surrounding the abuse of children in care has shocked many. There are questions to be answered from various agencies including the Health service, Justice department and the PSNI into what actions were taken and what urgency was placed on protecting those who suffered abuse.

"In terms of the PSNI we are concerned at the lack of action following the release of the Barnardos report. The critical time to act on the recommendations, which involved the PSNI, was directly following the release of the report. This clearly did not happen.

"It is also not clear as to how many of those responsible for the abuse were known to the PSNI or indeed on the sex offenders register.

\"We also need to ascertain how closely the PSNI operate and liaise with other agencies when reports of this nature and seriousness are published."Sinn Féin will be voicing these vital issues at the Policing Board today. There are failings and this has left vulnerable young people exposed. This is not acceptable.

"We have to learn from the lack of inaction to ensure that this does not happen again."
