Labour sets its face against Equality Budgeting – McDonald

9 October, 2013 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Speaking in the Dáil this afternoon Sinn Féin’s Mary Lou McDonald TD called on the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform to equality proof the government’s budget measures for 2014.

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Public Expenditure and Reform said:

“Time and again Sinn Féin has raised the matter of equality budgeting with both the Minister for Finance and the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform.

“Brendan Howlin tells us the objective of government is to underwrite fairness and equality in its budgetary measures. Government decisions on reducing the deficit tell a very different story. Far from taking the tough decisions Fine Gael and Labour, like Fianna Fáil before them, continue to target the soft options.

“Fairness was certainly not writ large when Labour and Fine Gael decided to cut child benefit or heap additional taxes on the lowest paid.

“The truth is that Labour, along with its government partners, has set its face against equality budgeting, a policy that its own membership has endorsed.

“Government’s failure to deliver fair budgetary solutions is exactly why we need equality budgeting. We need a robust structured mechanism placed on a statutory footing that ensures equality is placed at the centre of all decisions relating to taxation and spending.

“Sinn Féin’s Budget 2014 document puts fairness front and centre. Our budget proposals reduce the tax burden for ordinary families; we protect public services and create an environment for real job creation and growth.” ENDS
