Health chair demands minister explain his actions to the Assembly
Sinn Féin MLA Maeve McLaughlin has demanded that Heath Minister Edwin Poots comes before the Assembly on Monday to explain his actions around attempting to block equality legislation affecting people from the gay community.
The Foyle MLA who is Chair of the Assembly’s Health Committee said:
“The Health Minister needs to come before the Assembly on Monday and explain his rationale for bringing these legal cases to the courts in an attempt to block what is basically equality issues.
"Not only is Edwin Poots wasting public money with these court cases but he is also dragging down the image of the Assembly and portraying his department as a backward looking, prejudiced and irrationale government office.
"As chair of the health committee I demand that the minister face the Assembly on Monday and explain his actions. He has brought his own prejudice to his role as minister and embarrassed himself and his party by his actions.
"Yesterday's High Court decision along with the minister’s current appeal against the decision to allow civil partnerships and same sex couples to adopt is not only defending inequality but also a waste of public money.”
