Failing DSD Minister surrenders £23million Housing funds

21 October, 2013 - by Alex Maskey

Sinn Féin Chair of the Social Development Committee (DSD), Alex Maskey MLA has described the surrender of £23million of Housing Executive Grant funds as the latest example of Minister McCausland’s failure.

Alex Maskey said:

“Today’s October Monitoring Round announcement has once more exposed the failure of Minister McCausland’s tenure at DSD with the disclosure that at a time when the housing maintenance lists continue to grow, the Minister is surrendering £23million that should have been used to tackle this problem.

“This is just the latest example of the Minister failing to spend monies allocated for maintenance and building of social housing. With more than 40,000 on the housing waiting list and much of the present stock in a dilapidated condition the Minister continues to surrender tens of millions unspent budget allocation.

“In total across a range of his Departmental responsibilities the Minister has surrendered £32million. This is a serious indictment of the mismanagement of a Minister who continues to fail the people in desperate need of decent accommodation.”
