Sinn Féin welcome the ECHR ruling on Basque Political Prisoners.
Sinn Féin MLA Pat Sheehan has welcomed the European Court of Human Rights ruling today on the extended detention of Basque Political prisoners under the so called Parot Doctrine. This Doctrine has led to serious breaches of fundamental human rights and Mr Sheehan has called on the Spanish government to release all prisoners affected by this ruling.
Speaking today Pat Sheehan said:
"The decision by the ECHR to overturn the illegal detention of nearly 70 Basque political prisoners is to be welcomed. This is a victory of human rights and everyone should consider this decision a positive move.
“The Spanish government, through the so called Parot Doctrine, has kept a large number of Basque political prisoners in detention despite the fact that they should have been released years ago.
“Today’s ruling, in a case taken by Inés del Río Prada, has ramifications for up to 76 prisoners, all of whom should now be released without further delay. “The so called Parot Doctrine , which is highly punitive and breaches fundamental human rights, should now be removed from Spanish statute.
“It is now two years since ETA declared an end to their armed campaign and since international leaders including Kofi Anan, Gerry Adams and Jonathan Powell attended the Aiete International conference calling for the Spanish government to play an active and positive role in the peace process.
“This is yet to happen.
“The addressing of the injustice of the Parot Doctrine would be a significant confidence building measure by the Spanish government and I would urge them to move immediately to redress the outstanding cases.”
