Push needed for fiscal powers in North following decision on Wales - McKay

1 November, 2013

"Meaningful tax varying powers and significant borrowing powers are the critical tools for government in charting a path out of economic recession and into prosperity,  which must include significant job creation."

Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has called for a concerted push for the transfer of fiscal powers to the Assembly.

Speaking in response to the news that Wales is to receive further fiscal powers Sinn Féin economy spokesperson Daithí McKay said: “The offer of tax varying powers to the Welsh Assembly is clearly welcome news for  the people of Wales and their politicians.

"It highlights again the need for a consistent and persistent push for the transfer of fiscal powers from Westminster to the north.

"The Executive and Assembly’s lack of fiscal powers severely restricts our ability to promote economic growth, build sustainability, and set our own priorities.

"Meaningful tax varying powers and significant borrowing powers are the critical tools for government in charting a path out of economic recession and into prosperity,  which must include significant job creation.

"We now need a concerted focus and push in the time ahead for these powers to be transferred."
