Death threat against community worker must be lifted - Maskey

4 November, 2013 - by Paul Maskey

Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey has called on those behind a death threat against a West Belfast community worker to immediately withdraw it.

Chairperson of the Upper Springfield Integrated Partnership Jim Donnelly was warned that he was under threat from an armed ‘republican’ group and had to leave Ireland within 48 hours.

The West Belfast MP said:

“This is the latest in a list of threats against community workers in Belfast. Why these groups or gangs are targeting those who are seeking to help the community is baffling.

“Jim Donnelly has worked for years in both a voluntary and community capacity within West Belfast. He has worked with vulnerable youth in the area and constantly contributes in a positive way to the life of the community.

“These criminal gangs have nothing to offer this community and this latest threat re-enforces that. Those behind it need to realise that people like Jim Donnelly will continue their work to improve the lives of our community regardless of their idiotic attempts to make themselves relevant.”
