Gerry Adams departs for the United States
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams departs today for the United States. During his four day trip the Sinn Féin leader will brief the US administration on the political situation in Ireland and will attend the annual Friends of Sinn Féin annual dinner in New York.
Speaking before he left Mr Adams said: "Irish America and successive US administrations over the last twenty years have played a significant role in achieving the Good Friday agreement and assisting in the progress that has been made since then.
“However this year the process has faced serious difficulties and there are key matters arising from the Good Friday Agreement and subsequent agreements that have still not been implemented.
“I will be reminding the US government and Irish America of this reality and indeed of the need for their continuing engagement with the Irish peace process."
