Sinn Fein congratulates new mayor of Boston - O Clochartaigh
Speaking from Leinster House on the election of Martin Walsh as the 48thMayor of Boston, Sinn Fein spokesperson of Rural Development and the Gaeltacht, Senator Trevor O Clochartaigh said:
“I am delighted to hear that Martin Walsh, the son of Galway emigrants is the new mayor of Boston. Sinn Fein congratulates him on his victory and wishes him the very best for the future.
“A first generation Irish American, Martin’s parents John and Mary hail from the Connemara Gealtacht areas of Callowfenish and Ros Cide near Ros Muc.
“John and Mary emigrated to the US in the early 1950s and raised their family in Boston’s Dorchester neighbourhood, where they have lived all their lives.
“Martin will make an excellent Mayor and his union experience as president of Labourers Local 223, and as Chair of the Massachusetts Democratic Labour Caucus, will stand him in good stead.
“He is also an experienced politician and has served as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, representing the Thirteenth Suffolk district since 1997.
“ Martin’s victory is all the more significant as it was his ability to transcend the city’s racial geography and appeal to not just white Bostonians but to win the support of black and Mexican American voters that got him elected.
“Hopefully Martin will be Ireland in the not too distant future and pay a visit to Leinster House.”
