Challenge for Durkan as SDLP endorse discrimination – Carson
Sinn Féin Belfast City Councillor Arder Carson has slammed the SDLP for further endorsing the discrimination surrounding the Transitionary Committee.
Arder Carson said:
“Statutory Transition Committees (STC) will oversee the establishment of new shadow councils as part of the Review of Public Administration. The committees hold key responsibilities and significant authority.
“The ministerial guidelines for creating these committees should ensure that two Sinn Féin representatives would sit on the Belfast STC as the vast majority of the Dunmurry Cross area is transferring to Belfast Council in 2014.
“Despite this the DUP chose to ignore these guidelines and excluded Sinn Féin from the committees. This position has further been endorsed in a vote in Belfast Council today, which the SDLP supported.
“Minister Mark Durkan stated that local government reforms would be “focused on citizens and responsive to local needs” – he now needs to challenge this discrimination.
“SDLP councillors in Belfast need to explain the serious contradictions in their position and why they chose to support breaching the guidelines from an SDLP Minister.
“Minister Durkan must protect the rights of our voters by instructing Lisburn Council to implement d’Hondt so that Sinn Féin can nominate its two members to sit on the Belfast STC.
“The council has left itself open to legal action, which Sinn Féin have no doubt will be pursued in the interests of equality and justice for all of the electorate in Dunmurry Cross.” CRÍOCH/
