Traveller Education Framework a step forward for equality
Sinn Féin Education spokesperson Chris Hazzard has said that the Traveller Education framework launched today is a big step in bringing equality to one of the most marginalised groups in society.
Mr. Hazzard said,
“Traveller children have traditionally been failed in terms of education and have a low level of academic achievement.
“The Education Minister John O’Dowd needs to be congratulated for bringing forward this report today that will help reverse that trend and give traveller children the same opportunities as other children.
“A good education is important as a foundation for a more successful and healthy lifestyle and traveller children deserve that opportunity.
“The Traveller Education Framework is about giving equality to one of the most marginalised groups in Ireland and allowing each of them to fulfil their potential.
“I would encourage schools to work with the traveller community in order to see the recommendations of this report implemented and therefore open up more life opportunities for traveller children. “
