Rabbitte dances to Troika’s tune in selling of profitable state company – Ó Clochartaigh

13 November, 2013

Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has stated that Labour Minister Pat Rabbitte is dancing to Trokia’s tune in his decision to sell-off Bord Gáis Éireann.
Senator Ó Clochartaigh made the comments after Minister Rabbitte confirmed in the Seanad today that he was selling the company as a result of a contract entered into by the previous government and the Troika in 2010.
Senator Ó Clochartaigh said:
“The Minister’s decision is nonsensical. This is a profitable company which should be retained in the ownership of the state and its profits reinvested.
“The Government do have other options but unfortunately they are following the failed economic policies of Fianna Fáil and the PDs.
“The Minister categorically stated that the Government have no intention of privatising Uisce Éireann/Irish Water and that the assets of the company were of strategic importance. It is hard to fathom this logic when the company that controls Irish Water has now been given the green light to be privatised.
“Bord Gáis Energy made a profit of €79.4m last year and is by far the biggest player in the domestic gas market.
“It is disappointing to see Labour and Fine Gael Senators towing the party line while Minister Rabbitte and this Government dances to the Troika’s tune and sells off the family treasures.”
