“The burning of all flags, regardless of nation, and effigies is wrong” - Cllr Mac Giolla Mhín
Commenting on the independent evaluation of the council's "cultural networks" programme. Cllr Caoimhín Mac Giolla Mhín, Sinn Féin's representative on the Good Relations Partnership said:
"Sinn Féin have been consistent in raising concerns about this Bonfire Funding programme."
"In the Republican / Nationalist Community Sinn Féin, for many years, have recognised the association with anti social elements and the environmental impact on local communities.
"In fact we have been proactively encouraging diversionary activity to offer our young people as an alternative to celebrate their culture."
"The burning of all flags, regardless of nation, and effigies is wrong and indeed should be treated as hate crime."
"We have been consistent in opposing funding to groups who flout the regulations. There are regulations in place which are clearly not enforced for those who breach the terms for the funding.
"We firmly believe that Council officials and the Good Relations Partnership should be directing its energy in being more creative and productive in funding activities on how communities celebrate their cultures."
