Prostate cancer awareness programme needed

15 November, 2013 - by Oliver McMullan

Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has called on the Minister of Health Edwin Poots to instigate a publicity campaign to highlight the dangers of prostate cancer for men.

Speaking after the Assembly agreed a motion Mr. McMullan stated,

“As a sufferer of prostate cancer myself I raised the issue of introducing a screening programme for those men who have undergone treatment for the condition.

“At the moment once you have completed your programme, patients are left to manage on their own.  It is important that we introduce a system that these patients are routinely monitored to ensure that the cancer has not come back.

“I brought a motion to the Assembly and received full support and the Minister needs to take this on board.  He must outline what he intends to do to ensure that this happens quickly.

“I also asked the Minister to introduce a publicity campaign to heighten awareness of the symptoms of prostate cancer as early intervention can save lives.

“I would appeal to all men to have a regular check ups at their doctors as many illnesses can only be diagnosed through a thorough check up including blood tests.”
