Panorama programme emphasises need for truth recovery process
Tonight’s programme contains new information and provides a fresh insight into the use by the British Government of counter-gangs and secret military units
Sinn Féin President and Louth TD Gerry Adams commenting on tonight’s BBC Panorama programme on the Military Reaction Force said:
“The BBC programme shines a light on one aspect of Britain’s dirty war in Ireland. The existence of the Military Reaction Force, and its activities have been known for many years but tonight’s programme contains new information and provides a fresh insight into the use by the British Government of counter-gangs and secret military units.
“The publication several weeks ago by Anne Cadwallader of her book ‘Lethal Allies’ linked 120 deaths in the notorious murder triangle, Dublin, Monaghan and Dundalk to collusion with British state forces, including the RUC and UDR.
“Victims of the MRF and of collusion will be disturbed by this new information.
“There is an onus on the Irish Government to press the British Government to establish a truth recovery process that can provide support and closure for survivors. Sinn Féin has proposed that there be an international, independent truth recovery process. Others have different ideas and that is fair enough, but we need to take this opportunity to move the process forward in a way that looks after the victims but also builds the future for the survivors.”
