Ó Clochartaigh raises concerns at relationship between An Garda Síochána and Ombudsman Commission
At a meeting of the Public Service Oversight & Petitions committee yesterday Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh expressed concerns at the relationship between the An Garda Síochána and the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission.
Speaking after the committee meeting Senator Ó Clochartaigh said;
“The report from the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission on the way An Garda Síochána has handled the complaints procedure is damning.
“The testimony of the Commissioner at yesterday’s committee meeting seemed to be poles apart from that of the Ombudsman Commission.
“The Commissioner should explain why their seemed to be such a huge lack of trust between his organisation and the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission
“He needs to clarify if issues around the length of time for dealing with queries has been addressed and if he could categorically state that a proper oversight mechanism is now in place to ensure that no ‘off the books’ informants are in the service of the force.”
