Welcome for launch of new DCAL office and company in Derry
Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Ó hOisín has welcomed Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín's commitment to extending the legacy impact of Derry City of Culture 2013 throughout the whole North-West.
The East Derry MLA was speaking after attending this week's launch of a new Department of Culture, Arts & Leisure (DCAL) company and office, based in Derry, to build on the benefits of this year's City of Culture celebrations.
Cathal Ó hOisín said:
"I was delighted to attend the launch by the Culture Minister this week in Derry's Gasyard. City of Culture 2013 has undoubtedly been a major success for Derry during the past year. Sinn Féin has been consistent in attempting to see the broader benefits shared throughout the North West of Ireland, from Bellarena to Buncrana.
“This week's news that DCAL will be setting up a new company to deliver the legacy plan for City of Culture as well as a new DCAL North West office based in Derry, but focused across the entire region, is very welcome.
“I appreciate the commitment that Minister Ní Chuilín has shown towards redressing decades of regional investment inequalities. The minister intends to ensure widespread provision of new facilities in the broader region, subject to funding from the Executive, into areas such as Coleraine and Dungiven.
“We have the wonderful opportunity now to build on 2013 and develop the North West as a major hub for creative industries, cultural excellence, and wider social inclusion.
“In the context of DCAL's top priority to promote equality and tackle poverty and social exclusion, the potential in the time ahead is now very promising."
