Invite Robinson and McGuinness to address Seanad – Ó Clochartaigh

23 November, 2013

Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has asked the Leader of Seanad Eireann to issue invites to Peter Robinson and Martin McGuiness to address the upper house of the Oireachtas.

Senator Ó Clochartaigh made the request in light of the comments made by the North’s Attorney General, John Larkin, with regards to the issue of prosecutions in relation to the conflict.

Senator Ó Clochartaigh said:

“In light of the comments by the North’s Attorney, I asked the Leader of the Seanad Maurice Cummins once more to invite the First and Deputy First Minister down to address the Seanad. He has issued an invite previously, at our request, but this has not been taken up as yet.

“We have already had an address from the Leader of the Orange Order Drew Nelson.

“Sinn Féin feels that it is only right that we ask Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness to address the upper house to give an overview on the political situation in the North, their thoughts on dealing with legacy issues, and the challenges that face the Assembly in light of Tory cuts to the block grant.

“The Leader of the Seanad said that it would be ‘wonderful’ if they would agree to do so. He gave a commitment to renew his efforts and follow up on the invite previously sent.

“Sinn Féin Senators will use whatever influence we have to ensure that this engagement happens as soon as possible.”
