Doherty praises Strabane/Lifford border poll campaign
Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson and Donegal TD Pearse Doherty has praised the border poll held in Strabane and Lifford yesterday and said that the engagement shows that a very strong appetite continues to exist for a debate on Irish Unity.
Deputy Doherty said:
“First of all, I would like to pay tribute to all those from the Strabane & Lifford communities who participated in the border poll. It is also important to congratulate the people involved in the running of this tremendous campaign following on from the very successful poll in the Crossmaglen area earlier this year.
“It was extremely important that people took the opportunity to participate. The campaign demonstrates that very strong support that exists for the debate on Irish unity.
“This is a very meaningful project and one which is very close to hearts of the people. It is about realising the reunification of this island through purely peaceful and democratic means. These campaigns allow people to stand up and say ‘we are United Irelanders’ and we want to see reunification of our country because we believe it will be beneficial economically, socially and politically for all the people who share this island.
“It is crucial that both the Irish and British governments realise that Irish unity remains a live political issue on this island. We also have to be continually mindful of the fact the outstanding issues under the Good Friday Agreement must be resolved. The agreement must be implemented in full.
“The establishment of a United Ireland remains the best platform from which to build a just and fair society on this island.”
