Welcome for PPS appeal of lenient sentence - McKay
Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has welcomed the decision by the Public Prosecution Service (PPS) to appeal the sentence handed down to a pipe bomber earlier this year.
The North Antrim MLA said:
“I raised the case with the Director of Public Prosecution Service of local man Ryan McDowell who was put on probation for two years after being convicted of involvement in a series of pipe bombs attacks.
“The PPS has now told me they are appealing the sentence. The leniency applied to the sentencing of Ryan McDowell for planting the pipe bombs in Ahoghill and Portglenone had shocked many people that live in these communities.
“They were clearly sectarian attacks and if we as a society are serious about making this behaviour, regardless of where it emanates from, a thing of the past, then there has to be deterrents put in place.”
