Colreavy welcomes rejection of bids to buy Bord Gáis Energy

27 November, 2013 - by Michael Colreavy TD

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Energy, Michael Colreavy, has welcomed this morning’s statement by Minister Pat Rabbitte rejecting as unacceptable offers received to date from private companies wishing to buy Bord Gáis Energy.

Deputy Colreavy said: “I welcome the Minister’s statement, but would call on him to go further and to reverse in its entirety the plans to sell off this lucrative part of a successful state company.

“As I have pointed out in the debate on this, the privatisation of state companies has not been a success in the past. Eircom is a good example of this.

“Energy will be a vital aspect of the Irish economy in the future, and it is hugely important that this sector is retained in public control. I would urge the Minister therefore to develop Bord Gáis Energy as a public company, and set aside any plans to privatise it.

“If the Minister does decide to do this, he will have my full support in ensuring that Bord Gáis is developed to its full potential in the interests of the Irish people.”
