Quality and Traceability key to success for our red meat sector – Martina Anderson MEP

Speaking after attending a conference “Working Together for Growth” hosted by the Livestock and Meat Commission at Greenmount College in Antrim today, Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson said:

“I have always championed our local Agri-food industry at every opportunity in my capacity as MEP and promoted awareness of the safe, wholesome, high quality food produced and processed here wherever and whenever possible.

“Increased demand from consumers for safe, locally produced food means that our industry is well-placed to exploit opportunities for continued growth, both at home and abroad.

“These opportunities are reflected in the Agri-Food Strategy Board’s ambitions to grow sales by 60% and sales outside the north by 75% by 2020. I will do everything I can in Europe, to support these aspirations and I am confident that Minister, Michelle O’Neill will continue her efforts to support and develop our Agri-food sector to the best benefit of our producers.

Martina Anderson concluded:

“Quality and traceability is the bedrock of our local red meat sector. Our quality tried and tested traceability systems are valued and relied on by consumers and are key to the success of the sector.

“As MEP I look forward to maintaining a close working relationship with our producers and processors in order that I can help access and capitalise on the opportunities for them that present themselves in the future.”
