Decision urgently needed on future of children's heart services - McLaughlin
Speaking following a meeting with Children's Heart Beat Trust, Sinn Féin MLA Maeve McLaughlin called on the Health Minister to act urgently on the decision of children's heart services.
Ms McLaughlin, who is also the Chair of the Assembly Health Committee, said:
“This decision surrounding children's heart services has taken far too long. Families expected a decision in the summer and as this issue is delayed further, more children and families continue to be sent to England for treatment. This trip has its own financial and emotional burden on families.
“There is an urgency to this issue. The current children's heart consultant leaves his post in December - we cannot leave a gap in this vital service.
“The solution is an island wide model with a shared service in both Belfast and Dublin. We have seen all Ireland co-operation north and south in the decision by both departments to fund the radiotherapy unit at Altnagelvin. We now need that same level of cooperation in this instance.”
