Europe must ensure implementation of UN Disability Rights Convention - Martina Anderson MEP
Speaking from Brussels on International Day of Persons with Disabilities Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson called on the Irish and British governments to take immediate action to implement the UN Disability Rights Convention.
Ms Anderson said:
"Persons with disabilities are being disproportionally affected by many of the austerity measures being imposed by both Irish and British governments, are more likely to suffer from poverty and face social exclusion.
"The European Parliament must put pressure on EU member states to put in place concrete measures to implement the UN Disability Rights Convention. This includes an ambitious legislative proposal for a European Accessibility Act, ensuring the opportunity for equal participation in the European elections, and actively involving persons with disabilities in decision-making processes on policies that concern them.
"Protecting vulnerable people particularly those with disabilities should be a top priority should be a priority in any caring society.”
Martina Anderson MEP has signed a Declaration calling for strong action to support the rights of persons with disabilities in Europe.
