Full investigation into top-up culture required – Ó Caoláin

9 December, 2013 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Health Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has repeated his call for a full independent investigation into the top-up scandal at a number of HSE-funded bodies.

Speaking in the wake of the resignation of Brian Conlon, the Cavan/Monaghan TD also called on the outgoing Chief Executive of the Central Remedial Clinic to make a full statement to the Public Accounts Committee.

He said;

“The issue of the culture of top-up payments continues to rumble on. From the outset I have called for a full independent investigation of the policy and practice of top-up payments to senior executives at HSE-funded institutions.

“It is important that we have a full understanding of the scale and extent of this practice. There have been claims and counter-claims regarding who knew what and when, and at what level these payments were agreed. There needs to be full disclosure.

“This issue is bigger than the CRC and the individual personalities involved there. However, the hearings by the Public Accounts Committee are important and will add to the knowledge base. It is essential therefore that Mr Conlon, as well as his predecessor and other relevant personnel, fully co-operate with the Committee’s work in the time ahead.” ENDS
