Treatment of Bethany survivors “cruel and despicable” - Ferris
Speaking tonight in the Dáil on the Sinn Féin motion calling for delivery of a state apology, redress mechanism, and access to personal records for the small number of surviving men and women of Bethany Home, Martin Ferris TD said:
“There can be no doubt in the wide world that the Bethany Homes are another shameful episode of our past, which must be dealt with now, fairly and with respect for the human rights of the survivors of what was another horrific regime, causing immeasurable suffering, mainly to children.
“There is evidence in abundance of the facts that the Bethany Home in Rathgar, here in Dublin, was a maternity home, a children’s home and a place of detention for women on remand and women who had been convicted by the courts.
“There is no doubt about that and so, the exclusion of the survivors from the redress schemes is a cruel and despicable act.”
He called on all deputies to support the Sinn Féin motion to deal properly with this small group of survivors.
