Central Remedial Clinic should be totally reconstituted – Ó Caoláin

17 January, 2014 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

Commenting on the growing scandal of massive payments to the former CEO of the Central Remedial Clinic and other abuses of funds at the charity, Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD said that the needs of service users must be paramount and that the Minister for Health and the HSE should urgently assess how the Central Remedial Clinic can be reconstituted to provide services, make best use of public money and win back public trust. He said:

“The Irish people are shocked and disgusted at the greed and the gross abuse of trust at executive level in the Central Remedial Clinic.

“Charitable funds raised to provide services for physically disabled children and adults went to line the pockets of a retiring chief executive. Meanwhile people with physical disabilities are struggling to get access to vital therapies and other services. This is especially appalling for the parents of children with disabilities whose life prospects depend on early access to services.

“The Minister for Health James Reilly and the HSE, as well as fully investigating the gross abuses at executive and board level, should carry out a parallel examination of how the CRC can be fully reconstituted. The needs of service users must be paramount.

“The entire management and structure of the CRC needs to be thoroughly overhauled to ensure that every cent is directed towards the provision of services and that the very best use is made of public money and of charitable donations. Nothing less will suffice to win back public trust.”
