Front-line hospital staff give the lie to Government spin – Ó Caoláin
Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has said that front-line hospital staff are giving the lie to the Government spin that all is well with trolley numbers in hospital emergency departments.
“The statement by the Irish Emergency Medicine Trainees' Association that overcrowding in hospital emergency departments is ‘unequivocally dangerous for patients’ is a wake-up call for Government. The trainees point out that over the past two weeks trolley numbers have exceeded 300 a day, and this comes after the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation highlighted the increase in trolley figures in 2013 over the previous year.
“The reality is that the health cuts imposed by this Government are set to make the situation worse again over the course of 2014. Hospitals are under severe pressure and the bed shortage is acute. This is compounded by the decision not to provide additional funding in the HSE 2014 National Service Plan for nursing home places, leading to more older people occupying acute hospital beds for longer as they await ever scarcer nursing home places.
“As the HSE admitted in the suppressed memo to Cabinet in advance of publication of the Service Plan, the cuts being imposed in 2014 are unsustainable. Government policy must change.”
