Continuous failure to spend money on new homes is an indictment - McCann

22 January, 2014 - by Fra McCann

Sinn Féin MLA for West Belfast and Housing spokesperson Fra McCann has said the continuous inability of the Housing Executive to spend allocated budget monies is an indictment on the leadership at the Housing Executive.

Speaking today Mr McCann said:

“At a time when waiting lists are growing and housing need is at its highest we have learned once again that large sums of money have again been lost to the housing budget.

“This week the Finance Minister Simon Hamilton has reallocated over £15 million pounds, which was surrendered by the Housing Executive. This is now the third consecutive monitoring round where over £50 million has been lost to either housing new builds or maintenance.

“When I think of the thousands of people in my constituency in overcrowded conditions while others are languishing in hostels for the homeless it makes you angry at the levels of incompetence of those charged with spending this money.

“I strongly believe the Chairman and the Chief Executive need now to consider their positions and resign as this gross underspend on much needed housing stock has again happened on their watch.”
