DUP leader needs to clarify party position on banning play – Sinn Féin MLA

27 January, 2014 - by Cathal Ó hOisín

Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Ó hOisín has called on DUP leader Peter Robinson to state whether he supports the action of his councillors in Newtownabbey to ban the play by the Reduced Shakespeare Company.

The East Derry MLA and member of the Assembly’s Culture Committee said:

“This decision was taken by the DUP controlled council and Peter Robinson should come out and tell the public does he support this act of censorship by his councillors.

“Clearly there is not only widespread dismay at the action of the DUP and others in this matter but also embarrassment across the whole community.

“Dictating what entertainment people can and can not see has angered a lot of people and the DUP leader should let us know where he stands on the denial of freedom of speech by his party members.

“We all thought the days of unionist fundamentalists tying up swings on a Sunday and forcing their religious beliefs on others was thing of the past. Sadly this does not appear to be the case as a few bastions of intolerance appear to still exist in the North."
