Academic selection wrong to seize on GCSE results to bolster case for 11+

24 August, 2004

Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson, Newry Armagh MLA Davy Hyland has said that the pro academic selection lobby are wrong to seize on today's indications of excellent GSCE results to bolster their fight to save the 11+.

Mr Hyland said:

"Our excellent GSCE results are a testament to the hard work and commitment of our teachers and the hard work of students. However, it is not evidence to support the pro academic selection lobby in their campaign to save the 11+.

"Those who support the retention of the 11+ and academic selection are happy to throw a generation of young people on the scrap heap at 11 because they believe in privileges for the few. They are content to deny all our young people equal opportunities throughout their educational life.

"The pro-academic selection lobby appear to be happy enough for a system that creates a long tail; of underachievement and that sees particularly low levels of achievement among working class protestant communities. It is a disgrace that the pro academic selection lobby care more about reinforcing social division that the well being of our young people." ENDS
