Special Branch arrest Sinn Féin Member

25 August, 2004

North Belfast Sinn Féin Councillor Eoin O'Broin has blamed the PSNI Special Branch for being behind the raid on the home of a Sinn Féin member in North Belfast this morning. The man has been arrested and is currently being held at Antrim Interrogation Centre.

Cllr. O'Broin said:

" Just before 8am this morning heavily armed PSNI members accompanied by Special Branch personnel raided the home of a Sinn Féin member in North Belfast. The man has been arrested and has been taken to the PSNI Interrogation Centre in Antrim. This man has been the target for PSNI Special Branch operations over the past two years.

" We hear much from PSNI cheerleaders in the SDLP and elsewhere about the new beginning to policing. Insulting claims that Special Branch have gone away. Nonsense about repressive partisan political policing being a thing of the past. Predictably when we get incidents like this no SDLP representatives can be found to witness what the reality of policing on the ground actually is.

" I am demanding the immediate release of my party colleague from PSNI Special Branch custody and people in North Belfast will once again be angered at this outrageous display of a political police force in action." ENDS
