Public Money Funding Private Landlord Failings Must Stop - McCann

12 February, 2014 - by Fra McCann

Branding the Assembly regulation of private landlords 'a toothless tiger' Sinn Fein MLA Fra McCann has called for an end of spending public money in order to fund the failings of private landlords.

The West Belfast MLA said:

"The 'light touch' regulation of private landlords introduced by the Department of Social Development is clearly a toothless tiger and urgently needs reviewed.

"The private sector is receiving huge amounts of public money in rent yet failing to provide decent homes standards for many tenants particularly those with disabilities and older citizens

"Sinn Féin argued for robust measures to regulate private landlords and it's inconceivable that public money continues to fund the failings of this sector.

"The Assembly Social Development Committee are now unanimous in our call for Minister McCausland to urgently act to address the problems of private landlords who now are the largest provider of social housing and the largest recipient of housing benefit from the public purse.

"What is required is new legislation as the current scheme is so watered down as to be utterly useless in protecting the rights of tenants."
