Unionist paramilitaries suspected after South Belfast shooting

2 September, 2004

South Belfast Sinn Féin Assembly member Alex Maskey has said that given the location and the nature of last nights shooting in the Village area it will be many people's belief that it was the work of unionist paramilitaries.

Mr Maskey said:

" Details of last night's shooting incident in the Village area are not yet clear. What is clear is that a man has been shot and seriously injured. Given the location of the shooting and the nature of the attack it will be many people's belief that this was carried out by one of the unionist paramilitary groups.

" In recent months in this area we have seen an escalation in activity by the various unionist paramilitaries. This has involved attacks on ethnic minority communities and also on Catholics living in a local apartment complex.

" As has become common practice the response of the various strands of political unionism has been muted in the face of this activity. Indeed many nationalists believe that statements made by a number of local unionist elected representatives have actually given succour to these paramilitary gangs." ENDS
