Bullet arrives at home of Sinn Féin Councillor

2 September, 2004

Dungannon Sinn Féin Councillor Pheilim Gildernew has received a bullet in his post this afternoon. This bullet appears to have escaped the screening process at Post Office headquarters in Mallusk which uncovered up to 12 other similar packages.

Cllr. Gildernew said:

" This afternoon when I opened my mail I discovered a bullet contained in one of the envelopes. This follows on from reports that up to 12 party colleagues had similar packages intercepted by Post Office staff overnight. It is not yet clear how this bullet was missed by that screening process.

" This is clearly an attempt to intimidate myself and other party colleagues. It is not the first time that unionist paramilitaries have engaged in this sort of activity. Sinn Féin elected representatives and activists will not allow ourselves to be intimidated or prevented from representing our constituents by the activities of unionist paramilitaries many of whom are of course directed and manipulated by British state agencies."
