Sinn Féin MEPs endorse EU anti-discrimination road show
Sinn Féin MEPs Mary Lou McDonald (Dublin) and Bairbre de Brún (6 Counties) have today endorsed an information road show designed to inform citizens of their rights and entitlements in relation to anti-discrimination legislation in the EU.
The "European Truck Tour" will visit 10 countries in 10 weeks.
Speaking today, Both MEPs said:
"We would like to welcome this initiative by the EU Commission, to bring an anti-discrimination road show to Ireland, and indeed nine other EU member states. Diversity within the workplace, as in society in general, should be seen as a positive and progressive thing. Any initiative that attempts to bring the EU closer to the people is to be welcomed.
"However, the EU is still a very unequal place, where women are grossly underrepresented in decision-making, where people with disabilities are regularly denied full access to education, services and jobs, and where some member state governments still believe it acceptable to discriminate against people based on their national origin, religion, sexual orientation, family status or age.
"As MEPs we will continue to make equality a priority over the next five years. We would also call upon the EU Commission to extend the tour to schedule a stop in the 6 Counties." ENDS
