Become an organ donor

7 March, 2014 - by Declan McAleer

West Tyrone MLA Declan McAleer has encouraged people to sign up to the NHS Organ Donor Register.  He was speaking after joining the register online.

 According to Mr Mc Aleer

“I decided to become one of 18 million members on the organ donor register after learning that I could potentially save up to 9 other people’s lives in the event of my own death.

“I was shocked to learn that on average 3 people per day will die waiting for a transplant simply because there are not enough organs available.

“It is also a fact that you are three times more likely to be a recipient of an organ as compared to being a donor.

“You should therefore ask yourself that if you would be willing to receive an organ to save your life where would it come from if more people don’t sign up to the list.

“Many parts of the body are capable of being transplanted including the kidneys, heart, liver, lungs, pancreas and small bowel.  Techniques are developing all the time to transplant other parts to help even more people.

“Personally, I took the view that in the event of dying, my own organs would not be of any use to me, but they could be a life saving opportunity for other people who are seriously ill.  I discussed it with my family so that they are aware of my wishes and it only took me 2 minutes to register online.

“Whilst I appreciate that for various reasons some people cannot become donors, however I am asking people who are eligible to seriously consider joining up.  Your actions could save many lives”.
